Dr. Ben Feibel was born and raised in North Shreveport farming pecans with his father. Dr. Feibel attended Northwood High School and was involved in local sports playing football and baseball. Ben attended Louisiana College for his undergraduate degree and was a starter at center on their football team all four years, going All-American his senior year. After earning his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry in 2012, Dr. Feibel attended Medical School at LSU Health Shreveport obtaining his M.D. in 2016. From there, Dr. Feibel continued at LSU Health Shreveport as an Orthopaedic Resident for five years. Recently, Dr. Feibel completed a prestigious fellowship in Adult Orthopaedic Reconstructive Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Dr. Feibel is passionate about providing the latest innovative orthopaedic procedures to patients in his hometown and returned to Shreveport, Louisiana to practice with the Highland Clinic Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group. When he is not treating patients, Dr. Feibel enjoys hunting, fishing, weight lifting and spending time with his family. Ben married his wife Megan in 2014 and together they have a beautiful daughter, Katie-Claire. Together they are active at their church, Trinity Heights Baptist Church.

Dr. Stephen Hoge is joining Highland Clinic after recently finishing his Orthopaedic Spine Surgery Fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR.  Originally from Oklahoma City, OK, Dr. Hoge grew up playing competitive sports, including soccer and football.  He initially attended the University of Kansas on a football scholarship before returning home and finishing his undergrad degree in Biology at the University of Central Oklahoma.  Dr. Hoge attended the University of Oklahoma for medical school and graduated with honors.  Dr. Hoge completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at LSU Health in Shreveport, LA. During residency, he decided to pursue a career focusing on adult spinal problems.  Dr. Hoge further pursued his passion for spine surgery by attending a spine surgery fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR, where he gained a specialized knowledge and hands-on experience in the specialty areas listed above.

Dr. David Berken is joining Highland Clinic after recently finishing his Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at UT-Houston. As part of his fellowship, he trained under Dr. William McGarvey, the President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Early Life: Dr. Berken was raised on a rice farm in south Louisiana just outside of Lake Arthur. He grew up working on the farm with his family. He became an avid duck and goose hunter and also enjoys fresh and saltwater fishing. He moved from his home in south Louisiana to attend Rice University on a football scholarship.

College Life: While pursuing his goal to attend medical school, Dr. Berken also became a 4 year starter for the Rice Owls on the offensive line. He started a team high 48 games and was awarded the Bob Quin award, which is the highest-honor given to a male student-athlete at Rice. During his football career, Dr. Berken had multiple orthopaedic surgeries due to football injuries. Following graduation, he worked in a research lab at Baylor College of Medicine before returning to Louisiana for medical school.

Professional Career: Dr. Berken attended LSU Health Shreveport for his 4 years of medical school and 5 years of Orthopaedic residency. He spent his year prior to joining the Highland Clinic in Houston for his aforementioned Foot and Ankle Fellowship. Dr. Berken is a board eligible Orthopaedic surgeon, and holds memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. His expertise covers all areas of the foot and ankle including total ankle replacement, foot reconstruction, and sports injuries. In addition to his wide array of foot and ankle treatments and surgeries, Dr. Berken performs general fracture care.

Personal life:  Dr. Berken’s wife, Karen, is an OBGYN in Bossier City. They’ve been married since 2013 and have 2 young children. They reside in Shreveport and are members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  Dr. Berken’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, golfing, running and carpentry.

Dr. Carlton Houtz is an Orthopaedic surgeon for the Highland Center for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine located at the Highland Clinic main campus.  Dr. Houtz specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder, knee and elbow surgeries for patients of all ages.  He has specialty training in non-operative and operative treatment of sports injuries in athletes.

During his sports medicine fellowship, he served as an assistant team physician for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, Houston Dynamo and Rice University athletics.
